Hello! I'm Elizabeth.
I grew up on a small Quarter & Paint Horse breeding and training farm in North Central Ohio. Originally, we worked with mostly halter horses but that changed once my sisters and I became more involved in various riding disciplines. I started breaking and training horses on my own around the age of 15 and it quickly became one of my favorite hobbies. Throughout most my life I pursued veterinary medicine, finding early on that I really enjoyed equine breeding. I now run my small Quarter Horse ranch, focused on producing quality Quarter Horses that are bred for success in the rodeo or ranch arenas.

EXPERIENCE
Summer 2022
Veterinary Extern
Brazos Valley Equine Hospital- Navasota
I spent the summer working alongside all of the veterinarians at BVEH-Navasota. During this time I was able to practice many veterinary skills including injections, placing an IV catheter, drawing blood, ultrasounds on tendons, the abdomen, lungs, and uterus, pregnancy checks, stallion collection, semen preparation for shipping, lameness evaluation, taking radiographs, and much more. I also was able to assist in a tongue amputation, multiple enucleations, and a castration. Lastly, I was able complete one enucleation completely on my own under the supervision of a veterinarian.
2021-2022
Peer Tutor
Lincoln Memorial University- College of Veterinary Medicine
Throughout my time at LMU I was a peer tutor for Clinical Skills I, II, and III, Histology, and Animal Husbandry and Welfare. Peer tutors are selected based on their performance in the class during the previous years. My primary duty was to assist students that were struggling with the material or need help figuring out how to perform the clinical tasks necessary to pass the courses.
Summer 2021
Veterinary Intern
Gluck Equine Research Equine Reproduction Lab
I got to spend the summer working on an awesome research project alongside Drs. Mats Troedsson & Carleigh Fedorka. During this project, I was taught how to rectal ultrasound, identify the uterus, obtain a cross-sectional image of the uterus to assess edema levels in the uterus. I also got to practice skills I had previously learned such as identifying corpora lutea and follicles on the ovary, artificial insemination, collecting uterine biopsies, handling a stallion for collection, preparing and cleaning the artificial vagina, and giving IV & IM injections. I was able to learn more about equine reproduction during my summer back at Gluck Equine Research Center and obtain many new skills that will help me in my future career while also practicing skills I already had!
2018;2020
Teaching Assistant
Equine Handling
Both my sophomore and senior year at the University of Kentucky I was a Teachers Assistant for the Equine Handling class that is taught here. In this class, we teach proper handling (walking, backing, and turning) of horses, specifically following the tendencies of the Thoroughbred industry. We also cover proper grooming techniques, stall handling, haltering, quick release knots, and stall cleaning practices. In the round pen, we teach students how to free lunge, use a lunge line, and long-line. The TA's assist the professor in teaching all these skills along with bringing in all the horses each morning and checking student stalls.
Summer 2019
Intern
Kesmarc Kentucky, LLC
As an intern at Kesmarc Kentucky, LLC I perfected my leg wrapping and hoof packing techniques and practice doing surgical bandages. I also administered many different kinds of medications, filled prescriptions, treated minor wounds, and worked alongside many different veterinarians that are specialists in their fields while they treated or examined horses in our care; this experience ranged from respiratory, infectious diseases, surgical wounds, tendon and ligament injuries. I also had the opportunity to learn about all the new and cutting edge rehabilitation techniques in equine medicine and the outstanding list of benefits each method is proven to provide; these rehabilitation methods included Hyperbaric Oxygon Chamber, AquaTred, Bemer, Saltwater Spa, and the TheraPlate.
2019
Undergraduate Lab Assistant
University of Kentucky Equine Lab
While working in the Equine Lab at the University of Kentucky, I was assisting with a nutritional study, primarily testing a new feed to support their claims with research. I learned how to place catheters in a horse, draw blood from a catheter, take muscle samples, mix the test feed and control feed, and treat the wound from the muscle samples after collection days. I further advanced my equine handling skills.
2018-2019
Undergraduate Lab Assistant
University of Kentucky Poultry Lab
In the Poultry Lab at the University of Kentucky, I worked under a nutritionist and assisted in multiple different nutritional studies. I learned how to process the chickens into studies, prepare the different feeds that were used in the studies, weigh the chicks, and assisted with sample collection at the end of a few studies. I spent the majority of my time doing data entry/recording and processing samples. Sample processing included weighing sample, grinding bones for bone ash values, grinding samples for analysis (this included fecal samples and digesta samples, and liver samples), preforming Bomb Calorimetry, and collecting various data from eggs such as shell hardness and yolk color. Towards the end of my time here I observed some surgeries placing a cannula into the intestine of a pig for an upcoming nutrition study.
2017-2018
Undergraduate Lab Assistant
Gluck Equine Research Equine Reproduction Lab
My time with the Equine Reproduction Lab was on of my favorite experiences at University of Kentucky. I learned so much in this lab and discovered my love and fascination with equine reproduction. I assisted with a study looking into how urea supplementation altered early fetal development (conception- about day 12). I learned how to give IV and IM injections in horses, how to read an ultrasound, how to collect blood samples without a catheter, how to process blood samples, how to collect and process uterine tissue sample, how to artificially inseminate (AI) a horse, and (my favorite) how to collect an embryo! I was also exposed to the stallion side of AI procedures; I learned how to prepare an artificial vagina, proper stallion handling in a collection barn, handling of an artificial vagina during collection, how to handle sperm, and cleaning techniques for artificial vaginas and dummy mounts. I was also introduced to sperm analysis and how to extend and prepare a sperm sample for cooling or freezing. The undergraduate assistants were also responsible for feeding the mares morning and night during non-collection days.
Various times throughout 2017-2019
Shadowing/Internship
Animal Medical Center of Ontario-Small Animal
Here I worked alongside veterinarians and veterinary technicians to run heartworm test, conduct fecals, give sub-cutaneous injections. wrap surgical packs, restrain animals, draw up vaccines, fill prescriptions, and give nail trims and medicated baths. I observed many different surgeries, general office calls and had the opportunity to observe multiple euthanasias.
2015-2016 and Winter 2017
Shadowing/Internship
Byland Animal Hospital- Mixed Animal
I spent the majority of my time at Byland going on farm calls alongside veterinarians and preforming basic veterinary technician duties while at the farms. I observed multiple on-farm surgeries (generally to fix a displaced abomasum or a castration), pregnancy checks, and vaccination calls. I assisted with floating the teeth on horses and observed ultrasounds, mainly on goats. In the clinic, I observed dehorning procedures and a C-section on a cow. On the small animal side, I observed many different surgeries and appointments, read x-rays, ran blood tests, and helped with surgery prep and post-care.
